Club mourns loss of Giorgio Chinaglia
Posted on: Mon 02 Apr 2012

Everyone at Swansea City Football Club is saddened to hear that former player Giorgio Chinaglia has passed away, aged 65.

Chinaglia passed away at his Florida home on Sunday, having only recently returned after being taken to hospital last week with heart problems.

The striker made six appearances for the Swans, scoring once during his short time at the club.

He lifted the West Wales Senior Cup in 1965, scoring against Llanelli in a 3-0 win but returned to his homeland a year later and went on to play for Lazio before joining American outfit New York Cosmos where Pele and Franz Beckenbauer were among his team-mates.

Capped 14 times by Italy, he also featured for his country in the 1974 World Cup.

Below is a feature written by Mario Risoli that appeared in our Jack Magazine matchday programme on April 9 last year.

WHEN he made his debut against Nottingham Forest a fortnight ago, Fabio Borini became only the second fully-fledged Italian to play for the Swans.

The first was Giorgio Chinaglia, a striker born in Tuscan marble town of Massa, who was on the club's books from 1962-66.

There is also a case for current midfielder Andrea Orlandi who has an Italian passport. Both his parents were born in Italy, but Orlandi was born and brought up in Spain.

And despite being hailed as one of the Three Amigos when he arrived at the same time from Spain as Angel Rangel and Guillem Bauza, Orlandi classes himself as an Italian.

While the debate will rumble on with that one, there's no doubt that Swansea's latest Italian certainly enjoyed a happier debut than his predecessor, Chinaglia.

While the on-loan Chelsea striker scored twice in a 3-2 win over promotion rivals Forest, Chinaglia failed to find the net in a 2-2 League Cup draw at Rotherham in 1964.

But if the 20-year-old Borini goes on to emulate the one-time Swansea Town reject he will have done remarkably well.

Chinaglia later won the Scudetto with Lazio, was crowned Serie A top scorer, became the subject of a world-record bid from Milan, made 14 appearances for Italy and played in a World Cup before ending his playing career with New York Cosmos where he played alongside Pele and Franz Beckenbauer.

Yet when he was shown the door by the Swans in the summer of 1966 nobody, not even his closest friends, could have predicted his extraordinary football resurrection.

Chinaglia, whose parents emigrated to Cardiff, joined the Swans - then in the old Division Two - in 1962 after coach Walter Robbins had seen him play for Cardiff Schools against Wrexham. Cardiff won 3-0 with Chinaglia scoring all three.

After a month's trial at the Vetch the young Italian was taken on as an apprentice and soon began to make a name for himself in the 'A' and Welsh League sides.

Trevor Morris, then Swansea's manager, handed Chinaglia his senior bow in October 1964. For some time the teenager had been knocking on Morris' door to ask him when he was going to be given a chance. He was given an opportunity to impress on a cold night in Rotherham but failed to shine. "Are you still going to come knocking on my door now?" Morris asked Chinaglia afterwards.

He made his league debut in a 0-0 draw against Portsmouth at the Vetch in February 1965 but the teenager was marked out of the game by former England international and Pompey skipper Jimmy Dickinson.

Morris felt the teenager was not ready for league football and dropped him back into the reserves, incurring the wrath of his father, Mario, who was unhappy with his son's progress at the Vetch.

Chinaglia senior, who ran a restaurant in Cardiff, made several trips to the Vetch to discuss his son's future with Morris and club secretary Gordon Daniels. He wanted Swansea to release Giorgio so he could join an Italian club but his requests were always turned down and the discussions usually turned into heated arguments.

Swansea were relegated on the final day of the 1964-65 season and Morris was sacked.

His replacement, Glyn Davies, picked Chinaglia for the second game of the next campaign, at Bournemouth, and he scored Swansea's goal in a 2-1 defeat, a clinical finish three minutes from time. It was his first and last goal in British football.

His next appearance came three weeks later, at home against Grimsby after Davies wielded the axe following a 5-0 drubbing at Shrewsbury. The Swans won 1-0 although Chinaglia was subdued. Nevertheless, he kept his place for the next fixture at home to Workington, although he probably wished he was left out as the Swans slumped to a humiliating 6-1 defeat.

Chinaglia never started another Swansea game. Even though results failed to improve and Swansea were struggling near the foot of Division Three, Davies refused to pick him. "Glyn liked players tackling and throwing themselves into places," explained former Swans midfielder Geoff Thomas. "Giorgio wasn't that type."

Knowing his Vetch days were numbered Chinaglia lost interest in the Swans. He would often turn up late for training, usually because he had stayed up until the early hours playing cards or chasing girls.

Davies fined the young Italian for his poor punctuality to the point where Chinaglia had so little money he ended up stealing milk from the doorsteps of terraced houses near the Vetch so he could have breakfast.

He made his last Swans appearance in March 1966. The striker was named as a substitute for the vital relegation clash against Brentford at the Vetch but, after yet another late night, turned up in the dressing room just 10 minutes before kick-off.

Chinaglia was thrown on for the last 20 minutes and, unsurprisingly, made little impact. A week later he failed to turn up for training and was hit with a one-month suspension.

At the end of June he was released by Swansea but his father had already secured him a move to Italian third division club Massese. A year later he joined Internapoli who also played in the third tier.

After scoring 25 goals in two seasons he was snapped up by newly-promoted Serie A side Lazio for £140,000 and became an instant hero by hitting the winner against European champions Milan on his full debut.

The Roman side were relegated in 1971 but bounced straight back with Chinaglia, clearly more comfortable in the Italian game, netting 21 goals. He had now developed into one of Italy's leading players - tall, powerful with good feet and a lethal right foot.

He was rewarded with an international call-up against Bulgaria, scoring with his first touch after replacing Pietro Anastasi although his finest hour in an Italian shirt came against England at Wembley in 1973 - the same year Milan saw their staggering £800,000 offer for the ex-Swan rejected - when he helped the Azzurri claim their first ever win on English soil.

His meteoric rise shocked his old team-mates but the man who brought him to the Vetch was not surprised. "He hit the bar once in a Welsh League match at Newport," recalled Robbins after Italy's 1-0 win, "and I thought, 'Dear me he's broken it'. I'm not surprise he has got where he has. The potential was always there."

Chinaglia was Serie A top scorer in 1974 with 24 goals as Lazio claimed their first ever Scudetto. Appropriately, it was his late penalty against Foggia inside a sell-out Stadio Olimpico which clinched the title.

The man nicknamed 'Long John' was named in Italy's squad for the 1974 World Cup in West Germany but the tournament was a nightmare for player and country.

Italy, among the pre-tournament favourites, crashed out in the first round and Chinaglia was heavily criticised back home for making an offensive gesture at coach Ferruccio Valcareggi and storming down the tunnel after being substituted in the opening game against Haiti.

With Lazio in decline he joined New York Cosmos in 1976, taking out a full-page advert in the sports daily Corriere dello Sport to explain his decision to the club's devastated fans.

He became the North American Soccer League's all-time top scorer with 243 goals before returning to Italy for an unsuccessful spell as president of his beloved Lazio in 1983.

In 2000 Chinaglia, was named Lazio's all-time greatest player and last year he was appointed the Cosmos' international ambassador.
